To accommodate an increasing number of member schools moving to 8-player football, while continuing to provide a championship opportunity for schools with the smallest enrollments, the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association approved the addition of a second division to the 8-Player Football Playoffs among multiple actions taken during its annual Winter Meeting on March 24 in East Lansing.

Classifications for Michigan High School Athletic Association elections and postseason tournaments in traditionally classified sports (A, B, C, D) for the 2017-18 school year have been announced, with enrollment breaks for postseason tournaments set up by divisions posted to each sport’s page on the MHSAA Website.

March Magic Hoopfest will return to Jenison Field House for this weekend’s Michigan High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball Finals, marking the eighth championship weekend the event has run concurrent with the games being played at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center.

Longtime Auburn Hills Avondale athletic administrator Chuck Nurek dedicated much of his career to the training and educating of athletic directors and coaches that continues to impact schools and communities all over Michigan. In recognition of his work for educational athletics, Nurek has been named the 2017 recipient of the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Charles E. Forsythe Award.

 A valued voice both for female athletes and educational athletics as a whole, Ann Arbor Huron administrator Dottie Davis has worked nearly 40 years to create opportunities for high school students to excel. To recognize her vast contributions, Davis will receive the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s 30th Women In Sports Leadership Award during the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association conference March 19 in Traverse City.
