This is election season, and we’ll hear political commentators talk a lot about the need for candidates to “stay on message.” That’s probably good advice for those of us involved in school sports.

If we merely whisper our beliefs, not much will be made of the mistakes we make. But neither will much become of our message.
As I have prepared for October’s Update Meetings at seven sites across Michigan, I returned for guidance to the following words that were actually handed out at the 2007 meetings, titled “From Contradictions to Consensus”:
Essential to promoting high participation with high standards in educational athletics is not only maintaining but expanding training for those who are in charge of and care for our programs.
. . . we can sometimes learn most by looking furthest from our own type of organization
. . . the genius of interscholastic athletics, if you wish – is in being different from college and professional sports.
“While youth have always introduced new ideas that help shape culture, today’s young generation have found themselves at the very epicenter of major societal change."
