One of the ways the MHSAA has minimized the us and them divide is to provide for a governing board (the Representative Council) that allows most of schools’ diverse voices to be heard . . .
This “fall” meeting of the Council is usually one of much discussion and few votes. This is intended to be a meeting designed for Council members to think about issues without the tyranny of a quick vote to decide upon a course of action.
During each October for more than 20 years, we’ve invited attendees at MHSAA Update Meetings across Michigan to register their opinions on proposed changes in MHSAA programs, policies and procedures.
It happens two or three times each school year. A rule is violated and a forfeit occurs, causing a school to be removed from an MHSAA tournament.
Realizing the goals of even higher participation and higher standards in school sports requires not only maintaining but actually promoting essential eligibility rules.
Schools pay nothing to join the MHSAA or to enter MHSAA tournaments. Their obligations are not financial but administrative; and their opportunities are many . . .
In spite of everything that bothers us and batters us, school sports is still the best brand of youth sports in America . . . We still have what most kids and parents want in youth sports.
