For the fourth straight year, Michigan ranked seventh nationally in high school sports participation, according to statistics for the 2011-12 school year released recently by the National Federation of State High School Associations. That level of participation continued to best Michigan’s national ranking for total number of residents of high school age.

A new school year on the MHSAA Network is already underway with school-created content on MHSAA.tv, and this week marks the season launch of MHSAA Football Friday Overtime on FOX Sports Detroit, as well as high school football on Xfinity with coverage of Detroit Cass Tech vs. Birmingham Brother Rice.

Practice sessions begins on Monday (August 6) in football, followed by all other sports on Wednesday (August 6).  Practice in football must begin on August 6 for all schools wishing to begin regular season games the weekend of August 23-26. Schools must have 12 days of preseason practice at all levels before their first game, which may not occur before 16 calendar days.  All football schools must also conduct at least three days of practice before beginning contact, and those sessions may not include any pads.

In partnership with the University of Michigan’s NeuroSport and the Pediatric Trauma Program at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, required online rules meetings for coaches and officials will include an education component illustrating the serious nature of concussions; recognition of the signs and symptoms; a review of return to play protocols; applicable MHSAA regulations; and downloadable co-branded resources from NeuroSport, as well as materials produced by a joint effort of the Brian Injury Association of Michigan, the Detroit Lions, the Center for Disease Control and the MHSAA.

The extreme temperatures this Summer in advance of the start of another season of high school sports give cause for concern about physical activity in such conditions, and the Michigan High School Athletic Association continues its role in providing its member schools educational information to assist them in minimizing the possibility of heat-related catastrophic injuries to student-athletes.
