For the fourth straight year, Michigan ranked seventh nationally in high school sports participation, according to statistics for the 2011-12 school year released recently by the National Federation of State High School Associations. That level of participation continued to best Michigan’s national ranking for total number of residents of high school age.

A total of 97 schools won one or more of the 127 team Finals championships awarded by the Michigan High School Athletic Association during the 2011-12 school year. Four schools – Grosse Pointe South, Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice, Marquette and Houghton – tied for the high with four championships apiece.

Although the use of participation fees to help fund interscholastic athletics in Michigan high schools has doubled during the last nine years, the percentage of schools assessing them has held steady over the last two, according to surveys taken by the Michigan High School Athletic Association of its member institutions.
