Probably, it would be wisest not to blog about religion . . . But nevertheless, I’m going to; and I’ve chosen a holy day in the cold of winter to write about this hot topic.
There is only one statewide high school association in the United States that has designed its own coaches education program and delivers it directly, face to face, to middle and high school head coaches across the state.
Think of school sports as a savings account. For years and years, the program has made deposits in terms of trust and credibility. Students revered their coaches, often giving coaches credit for putting them on the path to good citizenship and a healthier lifestyle.
Fifteen schools have indicated preliminary intentions to conduct eight-player varsity football programs in the fall of 2010.
As reported in an earlier blog (Oct. 30, 2009), one of the topics the MHSAA Representative Council asked to be discussed this school year is the minimum frequency that should be required of member schools for checking student-athletes’ academic progress.
A previous blog, “Softball Steps Back” (Sept. 1, 2009), reported that the national softball playing rules will move the pitching rubber from 40 to 43 feet from home plate for varsity competition after Jan. 1, 2011.
Results of the 2009 Update Meeting Opinion Poll indicate attendees prefer the status quo over any “tweaks” in basketball seasons, but prefer a later start for spring sports.
