Five finalists have been selected for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s “Battle of the Fans V,” which will again recognize the top student cheering section from among member schools and culminate in a ceremony including all five finalists during this season’s Boys Basketball Finals at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Student Advisory Council will host its fifth “Battle of the Fans” contest this winter to award the top high school student cheering section in Michigan and promote the opportunity for a fun, positive cheering experience for fans supporting their teams.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association this school year requested for the first time that member schools report possible concussions by their student-athletes during both practice and competition. Preliminary data from the fall season shows two percent of more than 100,000 high school athletes experienced concussions, and 27 percent of high schools responding reported that none of their athletes experienced concussions while participating in MHSAA sports.

By a vote of 561 in favor and 87 opposed, the membership of the Michigan High School Athletic Association has approved an amendment to the MHSAA Constitution that for the first time in 2016-17 will permit schools to join the MHSAA at the 6th-grade level.

Gina Mazzolini, a pioneering athlete, former high school and college coach, and one of the longest-serving current assistant directors for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, will retire from her post at the end of this school year, effective July 30, 2016.

To provide for the convenience and safety of spectators attending the Michigan High School Athletic Association 11-Player Football Finals – presented by the Michigan National Guard – at Ford Field in Detroit, Nov. 27 and 28, attendees are being advised of a variety of items related to transportation and security – including policies regulating types of bags allowed into the stadium.
