MHSAA Network Celebrates 10th TV Anniversary

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Aug. 28 – It was ten years ago Wednesday (Aug. 29) that the MHSAA began its current television network efforts by broadcasting a season-opening football game pitting local rivals in small-town setting.

Sand Creek High School was hosting Blissfield in what had become a traditional season-opening game at the time, the two schools less than 15 miles apart.  The Aggies were celebrating a community effort by debuting new grandstands on the home side of the field salvaged from nearby Michigan International Speedway.  Townsfolk gathering across the street from the field in the high school for a fund-raising taco dinner, and the MHSAA Network was there.

In the ten years since that kickoff game, won by Blissfield by a score of 14-6, the MHSAA’s video production efforts have gone from games on cable television to an exclusively online effort powered by the NFHS Network – which produces over 135 events and over 400 hours of MHSAA Championships – and featuring a growing School Broadcast Program, which will produce upwards of 2,000 hours of regular-season games at over 80 participating schools.

Highlights of games appearing in the past week by MHSAA School Broadcast Program members and the NFHS Network make their 2018-19 debut this week.  Featured games are in football this week with Trenton’s 27-21 win over Allen Park; Zeeland East topping East Grand Rapids, 36-27; and Flint Beecher defeating Flint, 24-0.

Highlights can be found each week on the MHSAA.tv website, the home page of the MHSAA Website, and the MHSAASports Channel on YouTube.

The MHSAA Network is in its 32nd year of providing audio programming, featuring the weekly radio show This Week In High School Sports, which is in its fourth season on radio stations and audio webcast outlets across the state as part of their weekly prep coverage.

The five-minute program, powered by Michigan Student Aid, leads off each week with feature stories from around the state from the MHSAA’s Second Half, or from network affiliated stories and interviews.  This Week Game Balls are then presented for team or individual achievements in the past week.  Be The Referee, a 60-second look at the fine art of officiating, comes in the middle of the show; and is followed by a closing MHSAA Perspective.  The opening show will feature Tate Hallock of Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids; present game balls to Trenton football quarterback Jay Solano, who threw for 355 yards and four touchdowns against Allen Park last week and Hart’s Adelyn Ackley, who won the big school division race in leading her girls cross country team to the title at the Benzie Invitational last weekend; talk about a rules experiment in football in the Be The Referee segment;  and conclude with a retro MHSAA commentary about keeping the proper perspective in school sports.

This Week In High School Sports is posted to the home page of the MHSAA Website by Noon on Tuesday each week; and is also available on the MHSAA Network Website.  You can listen to this week’s show by Clicking Here
