EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sept. 9 –  Mother Nature was just that last Friday (Sept. 5) night, as thunderstorms wiped out many of the football games scheduled for the evening – including the six contests to be covered by FOX Sports Detroit for that evening’s MHSAA Football Friday Overtime show.

To the rescue came two contests produced by MHSAA members participating in its School Broadcast Program – Escanaba, which was hosting Traverse City Central; and Calumet, in a home showdown with Mid Peninsula Conference power Negaunee – as FOX picked up the live video streams of those games.  FOX had covered an afternoon game in the Detroit Public School League before the rains hit.

“Generally, the School Broadcast Program content supplements the games covered by FOX to provide some geographic balance to the show,” said John Johnson, Communications Director.  “So our student-produced video probably got a little more play than normal last week as FOX scrambled to fill a 30-minute program.”

The School Broadcast Program gives members an opportunity to showcase excellence in their schools by  creating video programming of athletic and non-athletic events; with students gaining skills in announcing, camera operation, directing/producing and graphics.  The program also gives schools the opportunity to raise money through advertising and viewing subscriptions.   As many as 60 MHSAA member schools annually participate in the program, which is in its sixth year.

Here’s the schedule of School Broadcast Program members planning to cover varsity competition this week for broadcast at MHSAA.tv  (As of Sept. 8):

  • Lansing Eastern at East Lansing – Girls Volleyball – Tuesday, 6 p.m. - Video on Demand available following game
  • Jackson at East Lansing – Girls Swimming & Diving – Thursday, 6 p.m. - Video on Demand available following event

Subscriptions support individual school programs; and many schools are now offering discounted annual passes through their portal pages, which will also allow for live viewing of nearly 300 live MHSAA post-season tournament events throughout the school year.
