EAST LANSING, Mich. – May 14 –  This week’s MHSAA Classic on the MHSAA.tv website features a contest with a classic finish and a classic announcer calling the game-winning play.

Detroit Tiger broadcasting great Paul Carey did the play by play of the 1992 MHSAA Class D Baseball Final between Hillman and Athens at Baily Park that year for PASS Sports, working with his nephew Mike Carey of MHSAA Championship Network affiliate WMMI in Mt. Pleasant.

Hillman won the game, 8-7, on a one-out bunt single in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded by Mark McMurray, who plated Tim Jones with the winning run.  McMurray, a freshman at the time, also pitched four innings in the contest.

This week’s featured game on Xfinity being covered by that PlayOn! Sports, an MHSAA Network television partner, is a Huron League matchup with New Boston Huron traveling to Carlton Airport on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.  Huron, which won the first meeting of the two schools last month by a 4-1 count, is tenth in the May 8 edition of the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Division 2 rankings.

Each week’s featured game will be presented by Xfinity to viewers on Comcast Channel 900 on the following Tuesday at 7 and 9:30 p.m., with additional replays throughout the week most weeks on Wednesdays at 8 and 10:30 a.m.; Saturdays at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sundays at 6 p.m.  The games will be online for Xfinity subscribers at HighSchoolSports.Xfinity.com, and highlights will also be available on the Xfinity on Demand service.  Here’s the remainder of the Spring schedule:

May 15 – New Boston Huron at Carleton Airport – Baseball
May 22 – Kensington Lakes Activities Association Championship - Softball

The video vaults of the MHSAA Network will be opened weekly during the regular season to feature a Classic contest from years past on the MHSAA.tv Website.

Weekly Highlights of selected games produced by MHSAA members participating in the Student Broadcast Program have returned to the MHSAA.tv Website for the Spring sports season, and this week’s package features a pair of big game-winning plays.

Student-produced game highlights from the week of May 6 are a 1-0 upset by Portage Northern of Plainwell in girls soccer, where Tia Lamie blasted the only goal of the game into the net on a free kick from 45 yards out; a come-from-behind 4-3 baseball victory by Oscoda against Tawas, where Brandon Franks hit a two-run, two-out double in the bottom of the seventh for the game winner; and Ludington’s 4-2 overtime win in girls soccer against Howard City Tri-County.

Over 60 schools are involved in the School Broadcast Program, covering athletic contests and other school events ranging from daily announcements and school board meetings to commencements and awards convocations.  Since the beginning of the school year, Michigan schools have produced 2,035 events, helping to contribute to the 1.43 million pageviews that MHSAA.tv has received.  In 2011-12, student-produced events totaled 2,474 over the entire school year.  To get involved, contact John Johnson at the MHSAA office.
