EAST LANSING, Mich - Oct. 15 - High school football’s second season in Michigan officially launches on Sunday (Oct. 21) at 6 p.m., with the announcement of the MHSAA Football Playoff field on the Selection Sunday Show on FOX Sports Detroit. The starting time had previously been listed at 7 p.m., but was moved Monday (Oct. 15).
Mickey York and Rob Rubick will reveal and breakdown the first round of play in the 256-team 11-player tournament field, as well as the 16-team bracket in the Association’s second annual 8-player playoffs.
Following the completion of the Selection Sunday Show, at approximately 6 p.m., the playoff qualifiers and first round pairings will be posted to the MHSAA Website. Game times will be added to the listings on Monday (Oct. 22).
The Selection Sunday Show is the second of two programs high school football fans can catch on FOX Sports Detroit this weekend. MHSAA Football Friday Overtime, in its second season on FOX Sports Detroit, will have its third show in its 60-minute format on Friday (Oct. 19) at 11:30 p.m.
York and Rubick host this highlights show, with featured games and scores from across the state. An encore presentation takes place Saturday’s at 10 a.m. Here’s where the FFOT cameras are scheduled to be this week:

This week's MHSAA Classic is the 1992 Class A Football Final between Harper Woods Bishop Gallagher and Traverse City St. Francis, which was won by St. Francis in double overtime, 28-21.

Through last Saturday (Oct. 13), the Student Broadcast Program had posted 396 events of all types of athletic and non-athletic events occurring between the schools involved in the program since the beginning o f the school year. There were 66 productions last week – 23 of them athletic events; the remainder programs ranging from homecoming parades and pep rallies to a public service announcement about the dangers of texting. Last year’s student-produced events totaled 2,474 over the entire school year.
Nearly 60 schools are involved in the School Broadcasting Program. Schools interested in becoming a part of the program should contact John Johnson at the MHSAA Office.
PlayOn! Sports coverage on Xfinity
PlayOn! Sports, an MHSAA Network television partner, will be in Grand Rapids on Friday (Oct. 19) for the O-K Conference White Division championship between Lowell and Grand Rapids Christian High Schools. It’s the ninth of 13 games that will be featured each week by Xfinity on various platforms.
On Thursday (Oct. 18), the PlayOn! crew will be in the Thumb for a girls volleyball match in the Greater Thumb Association between Unionville Sebewaing and Bad Axe.
The North-South game will first air on Comcast Channel 900 on the following Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., with additional airings on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.; and Sunday at 6 p.m. The USA-Bad Axe volleyball match will be shown on Channel 900 the following Monday at 10 p.m.; and again on Saturday at 3 p.m. The games will be online for Xfinity subscribers at Xfinity.com/HighSchoolSports, and highlights will also be available on the Xfinity on Demand service.
In addition, one game each week during the first four rounds of the MHSAA Football Playoffs will also be presented; and the upcoming Capital Area Activities Conference girls volleyball championship will also be featured.
MHSAA Perspective
Now in its eighth season is the radio commentary MHSAA Perspective, which will air on over 60 radio stations across the state, generally during the local broadcasts of high school games. The program runs for 30 weeks through the end of the winter sports season. MHSAA Perspective can also be accessed from the home page of the MHSAA Website.
