EAST LANSING, Mich. –April 14 The inaugural Reaching Higher Experiences, involving nearly 200 high school basketball players with aspirations to play the game collegiately, will take place on Sunday (April 19) for girls at South Lyon High School, and on April 26 for boys at Brighton High School.

An educational effort by the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, the Reaching Higher Experience will have classroom sessions for student-athletes and their parents; as well as on-court drills, testing and scrimmaging for the players to give them a vision for what it takes to become a college basketball player and also succeed in college life.  College basketball coaches will be in attendance at these sessions.

Participants in the program were selected by a committee of BCAM members.  The process began in December when local school coaches submitted nominations to the selection committee member in their BCAM region.  During February and March, the field was narrowed to identify the top 100 underclass players in the state in each gender.

The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,600 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition.  No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools.  Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
