So, as the world of football from youth levels to the pros is eliminating kickoffs or altering rules to reduce their frequency, I write smugly, “What took you so long?”

In school sports – educational athletics – we also have the objective that students learn habits of a healthy lifestyle they can carry into adulthood.
It may be that girls sustain more concussions than boys, or that girls are more forthcoming in reporting than boys are, or both.
Schools are taking head injuries seriously. It is not a lack of concern or a lack of care in reporting that has led to the 11 percent decline.
While football – the highest participation sport – has had the most concussions, the sports that follow are girls basketball (second) and girls soccer (third).
