We have problems that need addressing in school sports; but no matter how high our mountains sometimes seem, they are – in the overall scheme of things – high class problems.  And sometimes I find it hard to get worked up about our problems in a world being pummeled with real problems.

  • Revolution and retaliation in several North African nations.
  • Starvation and genocide in several other nations on that continent.
  • Earthquakes in Haiti.
  • Epic flooding in Australia.
  • Both earthquakes and flooding in Japan, and fears of nuclear meltdown.

And add the problems faced by those who are fighting serious illness, or those who have lost their fights; or those who have lost their jobs or homes, or both, during the economic meltdown.

These are real problems and they humble ours in school sports.

Nevertheless, while it is right to be mindful of serious problems elsewhere, we are called first and foremost to do our best with the matters immediately before us and entrusted uniquely to us.  And so we will.

It is in this spirit that we welcome people back from spring breaks, well deserved after a long winter, and much needed for the humble, yet important battles before us.
