We normally think of the MHSAA’s year as having three emotional peaks – the culmination of fall, winter and spring tournaments – and certainly that is how most of our constituents view the year.  And that’s good.

But for a smaller number of us, there is another important peak to the MHSAA’s year – the spring meeting of the Representative Council, this year May 2-4.

It is toward this meeting that MHSAA committees have been pointing and staff have been working to prepare recommendations for changes in MHSAA policies and procedures for Council action.  Approximately 60 votes will occur on proposals that have proceeded from coaches associations through meetings of league leadership and the state athletic directors association to the Council.  Many are accompanied by results of surveys conducted at Update Meetings last fall or online directly to all schools since then.

Just as important as the Council’s votes taken on action items will be the discussions of topics beginning to formalize for the Council’s future action.  This year those discussions will be anchored in the economic condition of our state and its schools and how MHSAA Handbook regulations and MHSAA tournament policies and procedures can keep schools’ expenses as low as possible for both their MHSAA tournament participation and their regular-season local program administration.

Minutes and summaries of Council action will be posted on MHSAA.com before the end of May.
