Last Sunday, nearly 100 underclass female basketball players converged on South Lyon High School for the second “Reaching Higher Showcase.”
“Reaching Higher” is the advanced placement course for high school basketball in Michigan. A cooperative effort of the MHSAA and Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM), it is an inexpensive, in-state alternative to the high-priced and often highly exploitive events promoted by commercial interests across the country.
The Reaching Higher experience is where students with a passion for basketball, and their parents, learn about what it takes to be successful in college athletically, socially and academically; and where college coaches observe students in drills and competition in a carefully controlled environment.
BCAM-selected high school coaches provide the on-court supervision and instruction, while the MHSAA provides officials who also are receiving classroom and on-court training as they “reach higher” in their avocation of basketball officiating.
