The classification process for MHSAA tournaments for the 2010-11 school year is completed.

  • There will be 192 Class A, Class B and Class C schools; 191 Class D schools.
  • The smallest Class A school drops from 987 to 967; the smallest Class B from 488 to 468; and the smallest Class C from 224 to 217.

These traditional classifications are utilized in MHSAA tournaments for basketball and volleyball and for the purposes of playoff point averages for the MHSAA Football Playoffs as 256 teams are placed by enrollment in eight divisions of 32 schools on Selection Sunday following the ninth regular-season football game.

For most MHSAA tournaments, schools that actually sponsor a sport are placed equally into two, three or four divisions.  Soccer places 20 percent in Division 4 and spreads the remaining 80 percent equally in Divisions 1, 2 and 3. Division for the 2010-11 school year are listed on the individual sport homes pages. Click here and then choose the sport you are interested in.

Schools may choose to play in any higher classification or division of MHSAA tournaments; and there are currently 59 such “opt-ups” in effect.

For what it's worth, I'd like to see MHSAA equalize the Soccer divisions, and move basketball and volleyball over to equal divisions. It's a better system.
