The Michigan High School Athletic Association will conduct a clinic for high school sports public address announcers on January 6, 2018, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the MHSAA Office. 

The clinic will use a curriculum developed by the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers, and be conducted by NASPAA members Tony Coggins of Holly High School, Steve Miller of Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse High School, and Roger Smith of Lake Orion High School – all of whom are MHSAA Finals announcers for Football, Basketball, Baseball and Softball.

The NASPAA curriculum that is taught at each clinic focuses on the role of the public address announcer,  public address announcing expectations (school, state association and NASPAA), public address  announcing philosophy, sportsmanship/NASPAA Code of Conduct, announcing Do's and Don'ts, scriptwriting, and handling emergency situations. 

“The public address announcer helps set the tone for educational athletic events,” said John Johnson, MHSAA Director of Broadcast Properties.  “At the high school level, we expect our announcers to inform everyone of what’s happening – not to entertain them; and to be a welcoming and reassuring presence.  This clinic provides information they can’t get anywhere else.” 

The conference registration fee of $75 includes the NASPAA’s second edition of The Voice Above The Crowd – the official public address announcing manual for amateur sports, covering 22 sports; a one-year membership in the NASPAA; and lunch. 

Registration is limited to 75, and those registering on or before December 19 will be guaranteed receiving The Voice Above The Crowd at the clinic.
