For the second straight year, Michigan slipped one spot nationally in high school sports participation according to figures released recently by the National Federation of State High School Associations for the 2008-09 school year.

Over 200 teams representing over 170 schools have been selected to be recognized for displaying outstanding sportsmanship during selected winter Michigan High School Athletic Association postseason tournament competitions through the Good Sports Are Winners! Program, and all will receive awards ranging from framed certificates to commemorative banners and crystal trophies from the MEEMIC Insurance Company, the Association's corporate partner in sportsmanship efforts.

The past couple of weeks, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be in a couple of historic high school settings. The first was on opening night for high school football, when our MHSAA Network crew made the trip to Southwest Michigan’s Berrien County to cover the festivities of the centennial celebration of the series between Watervliet and Coloma -- two towns two miles apart on the old Red Arrow Highway.

Since 1925, the official publication of the Michigan High School Athletic Association was its monthly Bulletin, which chronicled various committee minutes, provided information about MHSAA tournaments, and contained articles focused on the educational nature of school sports.
