A registered Michigan High School Athletic Association official for 30 years, Traverse City’s Barbara Beckett may be best known in that circle as the first woman to officiate an MHSAA Boys Basketball Final, in 1995. But her contributions in athletics are many and continue to be far-reaching, and they will be celebrated when she receives the MHSAA’s 26th Women in Sports Leadership Award on March 16 at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center.

The Buchanan High School student cheering section – “The Herd” – has been selected as this year’s Michigan High School Athletic Association “Battle of the Fans II” winner as the top student cheering section among member schools.

The MHSAA.tv website will be hosting nearly 500 hours of live streaming video over the next six weekends, beginning this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 15-16) with the Upper Peninsula Swimming and Diving Finals at Marquette High School.

The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Showcase takes center stage this week when PlayOn! Sports, an MHSAA Network television partner, will feature two games on Xfinity. The coverage will be of Wednesday’s (Feb. 6) MIHL Night at the four-day event, with Wyandotte Roosevelt taking on the top-ranked team in Division 3 – Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood; and two Division 1 powers – eighth-ranked Grosse Pointe North facing second-ranked Detroit Catholic Central – facing off in the second game.
