The greatest disappointments I experience in the administration of educational athletics are when I observe the program miss the opportunity to educate students in ways that will instill positive character traits.
The MHSAA will have its “40th Anniversaries” for seven of its girls sports tournaments during the next three school years . . .
As local print media collapse and school sports receive less and less complete and competent coverage . . . the MHSAA has moved to help fill the void.
You probably wouldn’t be much attracted to a “Help Wanted” posting in the classified ads of your local newspaper that read: Help Wanted! Long hours. Late nights. Low pay. Frequent criticism.
During my first winter on the job with the MHSAA I took my 4th-grade son to his first basketball practice, and I watched uncomfortably when his coach directed him to set a pick. My son didn’t have a clue what that meant, and was embarrassed; and I felt like a complete and utter failure as a sports dad.
In my opinion, in a few years we’re going to be saying that we’ve lost some things in our schools that have been important to us; and we’re going to find them right where we lost them.
Tomorrow may be just the first day of autumn, but we are already far into the fall season of school sports in Michigan. Here are some early observations:
