All this comes at a challenging time for our officiating program which is most dramatically demonstrated by this fact: the number of MHSAA registered officials has declined by 1,895 - 17.5 percent – over the past four years!

During our discussion, the mothers pleaded with me – that’s not too strong a word – to help develop policies that would preserve a place on high school teams for their children.
Sometimes it is quicker or more economical or just more acceptable to go in one direction for awhile in order to reach an ultimate goal that’s in the opposite direction.
School sports have survived two World Wars, the Korean War and Vietnam, as well as the Great Depression and multiple recessions.
It is almost to the point where if I see non-school sports do one thing, I recommend school programs do the opposite.
My vacationing mind then jumped quickly across the ocean and centuries to my working preoccupation with the essentials of school-based sports.
High scores on standardized tests are terrific and training in vocational skills is desirable. But neither will save the planet.
