Waterford Kettering exploded for a three-run rally in the top of the seventh to spoil a
no-hitter and a repeat-title bid by Portage Northern to wrest the MHSAA Division I
softball championship away from the Huskies, 3-0. It was Kettering's second MHSAA
championship, with the other coming in 1991, and a perfect ending for Joe Alsup's first
season as head coach. The Captains began the seventh with a double off the bat of
freshman shortstop Andrea Hillsey, ending Kristalyn Smith's dominance. Hillsey
eventually scored on an RBI single by sophomore DH Theresa Flowers. Junior outfielder
Stacie Wilson capped the inning with a two-run single. Kettering freshman Jessica
Brubaker turned in a solid pitching performance, yielding five hits on her way to the
shutout. Kettering completed a 36-5 campaign, while Portage Northern finished 34-9.
