Scholar-Athlete Award Scholarship Recipients Announced in Class B

EAST LANSING , Mich. - Feb. 21 - The scholarship recipients from Class B member schools for the 2005-06 Michigan High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Award program have been selected.

Farm Bureau Insurance, in its 17th year of sponsoring the award, will give a $1,000 college scholarship to 32 individuals who represent their member school in at least one sport in which the Association sponsors a post-season tournament.  The first 30 scholarships are awarded proportionately by school classification and the number of student-athletes involved in those classes; and there are two at-large honorees to assure minority representation among the scholarship recipients.

A minimum of 12 scholarships will be awarded to Class A student-athletes, 6 female and 6 male; 8 scholarships will be awarded to Class B student-athletes, 4 female and 4 male; 6 scholarships will be awarded to Class C student-athletes, 3 female and 3 male; and 4 scholarships will be awarded to Class D student-athletes, 2 female and 2 male.  The 2 at-large recipients may come from any classification, and are designated by their school at the time of entry.

Each of the scholarship recipients will be honored at halftime ceremonies of the Class C Boys Basketball final game at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing on March 25. Commemorative plaques will be given to other finalists in recognition of their accomplishments.

The Class B Scholar-Athlete Award honorees are:   Bryan Andrew Berger, Marshall; Jessica Frankowski, Roscommon; Marissa Jane Ingle, Delton Kellogg; Nicholaus Arthur Josey, Flint Powers Catholic; Kristen Lazaroff, Jackson Lumen Christi; Jacob Stewart, Chesaning Union; Rick Storm, Niles; and Elizabeth Louise Tepe, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood.

Bryan Andrew Berger, Marshall.  Earned three varsity letters in soccer, three in tennis and two in track and field.  Captain of soccer team senior year.  Received most hustle award sophomore, junior and senior years.  Class president junior and senior years.  Member and captain of Ski Club.  School computer technician junior and senior years.  Provided lawn assistance for the elderly sophomore, junior and senior years.  Volunteer at the Smiling Cat Rescue Program all four years.  Participated in many charity events, including March to Mississippi for hurricane relief, which raised $5,000. Plans to attend Western Michigan University to study engineering.

Essay Quote - “With educational sports being very similar to that of the business community, behaving in correlation with the characteristics of sportsmanship during educational athletics amplifies the possibility of becoming successful in the future.”

Jessica Frankowski, Roscommon.  Earned four varsity letters in skiing, three in softball, and two in basketball.  Skiing honors include first team all-conference and all-region slalom and second team all-conference giant slalom.  Honorable mention catcher in softball.  Softball team MVP and sportsmanship award.  Involved with chamber choir for three years, quiz bowl for four years, National Honor Society for two years, and class congress for four years.  Volunteers with St. Michael’s Youth Group and Youth Band, and Michigan Fireman’s Memorial Festival Committee.  Plans to major in pre-medicine and English at Northern Michigan University. 

Essay Quote  – “Sportsmanship can not be defined using words, but rather by portraying by example.  It is expressed in actions, dedication, and positive attitudes and enriches any team environment.”

Marissa Jane Ingle, Delton Kellogg.  Earned four varsity letters in cross country and track and field and one varsity letter in volleyball.  Cross country MVP three years.  KVA and MHSAA Regional medalist four years.  MHSAA Finals cross country qualifier four years.  Two years academic all-state.  Cross country captain 2005.  Track most improved player in 2003.  3,200-meter relay school record holder.  Student class representative four years.  Drama club member sophomore and senior years.  Fellowship of Christian Athletes member junior and senior years.  Leadership Committee for Athletes member senior year.  Volunteers with Interact and Teens Against Tobacco Use.  Plans on studying elementary education at either Alma College, Lake Superior State, Hope College, Cornerstone College or Adrian College.

Essay Quote  – “Guess what high school athletes? Your communities are watching you whether you like it or not.  We are the miniature Olympians that everyone watches.  Your success is their success, and your loss is their loss.  Sportsmanship reflects that.”

Nicholaus Arthur Josey, Flint Powers Catholic.  Earned four varsity letters in skiing and one in track and field.  Captain of ski team junior and senior years.  Second team academic all-state in 2005.  Earned first place and awarded most valuable skier at the Big Nine Conference meet.  SEMSL qualifier.  Qualifier for MHSAA Final meet.  President of student government senior year.  Finalist all three years at Flint Area Science Fair and three-year entrant at the Michigan State Science Fair.  Member of the marching band all four years and section leader senior year.  Participated in school musicals four years, forensics broadcasting team four years, student congress two years, Model UN two years, Yellow Ribbon Club three years, SADD four years, and Student Ambassador two years.  Spirit Club member for four years, president senior year.  Also active at St. Michael’s Youth Ministry, Diocese of Lansing and St. John Vianney.  Plans to attend University of Michigan to study communications/sports broadcasting.

Essay Quote - “Sportsmanship is the overall behavior of an individual before, during and after a competition.  Educational athletics will thrive only when every athlete is respectful to their competition, the referees and parents, and themselves.”  

Kristen Lazaroff, Jackson Lumen Christi.  Three-year varsity letterwinner in soccer and volleyball and one year in basketball.  Soccer team most improved player in 2003.  All-district and all-conference soccer 2004.  Four year member of student council including junior class treasurer and senior class president.  Three-year member of National Honor Society serving as vice president senior year.  Four-year member of Building With Books serving on the executive board senior year.  Also involved with campus ministry for two years.  Homecoming Queen senior year.  Undecided on college she will attend, but plans on majoring in pharmacy.

Essay Quote- “The true test of sportsmanship is the ability to swallow your pride and display notions of well wishes to the team who just took what you believed was yours.  Not only does this teach the virtue of humility, but it also spreads the message of true sportsmanlike conduct.”

Jacob Stewart, Chesaning Union.  Earned two varsity letters in soccer, two in basketball and three in baseball.  Captain of the soccer team senior year.  Coach’s award senior year.  Honorable mention all-conference goalkeeper junior year.  Most improved player junior year.  Member of Student Council all four years, treasurer junior year, president senior year.  National Honor Society member junior and senior years.  Student Council State Board of Delegates junior and senior years, vice president senior year.  Member of International Club junior year.  Showboat and Candlewalk volunteer all four years.  Church greeter sophomore and junior years.  Plans to study engineering at the University of Michigan.

Essay Quote- “The lessons and experiences that students take from educational athletics can not be duplicated.  When good sportsmanship is practiced in conjunction with these games, life long lessons will be provided to participants.”

Rick Storm, Niles.  Lettered in baseball four years and football three years.  Academic all-state baseball 2004 and football 2005.  Second team all-conference football in 2005.  Treasurer of the Varsity “N Club” junior year and President senior year.  Member of the National Honor Society two years, Student Council two years, Berrien County Mathematics and Science Center Class President two years.  Volunteered with the Salvation Army for “Stuff-a-Bus” Program junior and senior years.  Helped out with Senior Citizens Prom Senior Year.  Plans to attend either University of Michigan, U.S. Military Academy or U.S.  Naval Academy to study mechanical engineering.  

Essay Quote - “Many people think sportsmanship is merely following the rules in some type of game.  They are only partially right.  Sportsmanship, however, encompasses a much larger world than just athletic competitions.  It plays an integral role on and off the field.  Sports simply teach and then reinforce the way people should act each and every single day.”

Elizabeth Louise Tepe, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood.  Earned three varsity letters in lacrosse and field hockey.  Lacrosse captain in 2006.  Field hockey coaches award in 2005.  Field Hockey Futures Program selection, 2004-2006.  Sophomore and Junior symphony band member.  Gold Key Admissions Guide member sophomore, junior, and senior years.  Culinary Arts club member currently serving as vice president.  Conduct Review Board member senior year.  Youth league soccer referee.  Undecided on college she will attend, but plans to major in pre-law.

Essay Quote – “Sports have shaped the person I am today – without them I would not be me.  The adherence to sportsmanship instilled in me by my family and my school have allowed for the sports field to remain a sanctuary from the increasingly complex and often chaotic world outside.”

Blair Williams, Flint Powers Catholic; Charles Zelkowski, Harrison; Marty Geldhof, Ionia; Benjamin Neville, Jackson Lumen Christi; Jonathan Poole, Niles; John Reck, Paw Paw; Anthony Agrusa, St Clair Shores Lake Shore; and Stephan Miller, Stanton Central Montcalm.

Students applying for the Scholar-Athlete Award must be carrying at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average, and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the Michigan High School Athletic Association sponsors a postseason tournament. Other requirements for the applicants were to show active participation in other school and community activities and produce an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.

Class C and D honorees will be announced on Feb. 28.

The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,800 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition.  No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools.  Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
