Overviews of the scholarship recipients of the Class B Scholar-Athlete Award follow. A quote from each recipient's essay is also included:
Essay Quote - “With educational sports being very similar to that of the business community, behaving in correlation with the characteristics of sportsmanship during educational athletics amplifies the possibility of becoming successful in the future.”
Essay Quote – “Sportsmanship can not be defined using words, but rather by portraying by example. It is expressed in actions, dedication, and positive attitudes and enriches any team environment.”
Essay Quote – “Guess what high school athletes? Your communities are watching you whether you like it or not. We are the miniature Olympians that everyone watches. Your success is their success, and your loss is their loss. Sportsmanship reflects that.” Essay Quote - “Sportsmanship is the overall behavior of an individual before, during and after a competition. Educational athletics will thrive only when every athlete is respectful to their competition, the referees and parents, and themselves.”
Essay Quote- “The true test of sportsmanship is the ability to swallow your pride and display notions of well wishes to the team who just took what you believed was yours. Not only does this teach the virtue of humility, but it also spreads the message of true sportsmanlike conduct.”
Essay Quote- “The lessons and experiences that students take from educational athletics can not be duplicated. When good sportsmanship is practiced in conjunction with these games, life long lessons will be provided to participants.”
Essay Quote - “Many people think sportsmanship is merely following the rules in some type of game. They are only partially right. Sportsmanship, however, encompasses a much larger world than just athletic competitions. It plays an integral role on and off the field. Sports simply teach and then reinforce the way people should act each and every single day.” Essay Quote – “Sports have shaped the person I am today – without them I would not be me. The adherence to sportsmanship instilled in me by my family and my school have allowed for the sports field to remain a sanctuary from the increasingly complex and often chaotic world outside.” Other Class B girls finalists for the Scholar-Athlete Award were: Ashley Mankin, Cheboygan; Other Class B boys finalists for the Scholar-Athlete Award were: Brent DesArmo, Cheboygan; Students applying for the Scholar-Athlete Award must be carrying at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average, and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the Michigan High School Athletic Association sponsors a postseason tournament.
