Junior Chris Cohoon and senior Joe Linde combined on a three-hitter as Midland took its
third MHSAA baseball championship with a 2-1 win over Saline on Saturday. The Chemics
(37-5), who also won titles in 1973 and 1982 under Frank Altimore, gave 15-year head
coach Terry Wilczek his first championship after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first
inning and then hanging on. The Chemics runs came on an RBI ground out by senior
shortstop Denny Sian, and an RBI single off the bat of senior third baseman Tyson Martin.
Saline (27-15-1), which overcame a three-run deficit in the last inning of a 10-9 win
over Detroit Catholic Central to reach the finals, rallied again in its final at bat
before coming up just short. Saline pitcher Bobby Korecky scored when teammate Mike Gall
reached first base on a missed third strike that would have ended the game. Then, right
fielder Matt Trombley singled to put the tying run on second, before Midland recorded a
force out to end the game. Korecky went the distance for Saline, shutting down Midland
after its two first-inning runs.
